The Super Mario Bros. Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie includes a moment where Donkey Kong, played by Seth Rogen, expresses to his rival Mario, portrayed by Chris Pratt, that he's more than just a brute who causes destruction. This particular scene may bring about a sense of deja vu for those who have seen animated films in the last century. Disney has previously created two movies that explore the same theme, and they are Wreck-It Ralph and its sequel. These films lovingly parodied the Donkey Kong and Mario games, but they were also significantly more intelligent than the current Mario movie, which is a direct adaptation of the games.
While those who enjoy spotting fan-service references may be delighted by the abundance of Easter eggs throughout the film, there isn't much else to engage with as far as the plot is concerned. The Easter eggs are undoubtedly placed with care and affection, but the movie seems to rely entirely on them instead of presenting a coherent storyline.
Unfortunately, we don't learn much more about Mario beyond the fact that he enjoys running, never gives up, and has let down his father. Additionally, he despises mushrooms, which is a detail that is reminiscent of Robert Altman's Popeye. Luigi, portrayed by Charlie Day, is primarily characterized as being cowardly and clumsy, but he will eventually overcome these traits when it matters most.
