Elon Musk's Twitter Acquisition Sparks Confusion with New Verification System
Elon Musk's six-month tenure as Twitter's CEO has brought about significant changes in the platform's verification system, causing confusion and chaos among its users. Musk's overhaul of the verification system has resulted in the coveted blue checkmark being available for purchase through Twitter's subscription service, Twitter Blue, rather than just being given out to celebrities, government agencies, and media organizations.
According to estimates provided by a Berlin-based software developer, Travis Brown, there were at least 550,000 Twitter Blue subscribers as of April 23, just days after Musk stripped all users of legacy blue checks. This number surpasses the previous number of verified accounts under the old verification system, which was over 400,000 accounts.
However, the confusion arises as Musk is gifting some celebrities with the Twitter Blue service, making it unclear how many subscribers are actually paying customers. The ambiguity surrounding the service raises questions about how much Twitter can grow its subscriptions, which Musk has made central to his plan to boost the company's revenue.
Despite the success in terms of subscribers, the changes have not been well received by Twitter users. Musk's elimination of over 80% of Twitter's staff and reshaping of the site's policies have drawn criticism for their impact on safety and transparency. Furthermore, many top advertisers have left the platform, leading Musk to value it at around $20 billion, less than half of what he paid for it.
Musk's boldest and biggest change has been the introduction of Twitter Blue, a subscription model that lets anyone pay $8 per month for a blue badge and other features, such as prioritized rankings in conversations and search. However, the introduction of Twitter Blue has resulted in chaos and confusion, as seen when an account impersonating pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company tweeted "insulin is free now," causing the stock to nosedive, leading to the program's pause only days after its launch.
The confusion surrounding the verification system has led to a cultural change on the platform. Once a sought-after status symbol, many users find the blue badge no longer cool, especially as the blue checkmark began popping up on famous accounts. Celebrities such as Lil Nas X and Chrissy Teigen have vehemently denied paying for the service, further highlighting the confusion surrounding Twitter Blue.
As Musk continues to make changes to Twitter, the future of the platform remains uncertain, with confusion and chaos among its users.
