Gone Too Soon: Comedian Gareth Richards Passes Away in Tragic Car Crash
Popular comedian Gareth Richards tragically passed away as a result of a vehicular accident. The former co-host of the Frank Skinner Show on Absolute Radio succumbed to severe head injuries sustained in a crash that occurred on March 27. In a statement, his grieving spouse, Laura, revealed that he had been taken off life support. Fellow comedian Jason Manford, devastated by the news of the 41-year-old's untimely death, paid tribute to the "wonderfully creative" comic.
Richards has been an established stand-up comedian since 2004, with numerous appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and on various BBC TV and radio comedy programs. He co-hosted the Frank Skinner Show on Absolute Radio with Skinner and Emily Dean for two years.
Last week, Skinner emotionally broke down on air as he spoke about Richards, stating that the show's team had decided not to continue without acknowledging the loss of their friend. Skinner fondly remembered how Richards had been invited to join the show after an initially "rubbish" pilot, and how he had become an integral part of the team.
Since news of Richards' passing, tributes have poured in from friends and admirers in the comedy industry. Emily Dean, Richards' former co-host, expressed her deep sorrow and gratitude for knowing him, describing him as hilarious, kind, and gentle. Jason Manford remembered him as a "kind and thoughtful" man, while Rhys James hailed him as a "giant of joke writing". Elis James shared his admiration for Richards' talent and character, calling him a joy to be around.
Adam Kay expressed indescribable sadness at the loss of Richards, describing the outpouring of tributes as a near-perfect eulogy for a person who was universally regarded as kind and sweet by everyone he met. The Frank Skinner Show tweeted that they were heartbroken and would greatly miss Richards, announcing plans to release a podcast featuring some of his best moments on their show as a tribute to his memory.
